e-conference on Indian Seismic Codes
(January 26 - February 8, 2002)
hosted by
National Information Centre of Earthquake Engineering
Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur
Recent Indian earthquakes have brought the seismic vulnerability of our modern cities and civil infrastructure in focus. As you are aware, that structural design codes play a very vital role in ensuring the construction of safe structures. It is very important that not only these codes reflect the state-of-the-knowledge, but also they are fully understood for the proper implementation.
Beginning January 26, 2002, the first anniversary of the Bhuj earthquake, NICEE (National Information Centre of Earthquake Engineering) hosted a two-week e-conference on Indian Seismic Codes (IS:1893 and IS:13920). The participants shared their concerns, knowledge and experience with fellow professionals. This e-conference was targeted at civil engineers involved in design and construction, and participation in it was free. The participants only needed to have an access to e-mail and preferably to the Web for browsing resource materials. The discussion was moderated by Professor Durgesh C. Rai of IIT Kanpur and Ms. Alpa R. Sheth of Vakil, Mehta and Sheth Consulting Engineers, Bombay.
